Light Filled Family Living Transformation
Light Filled Family Living Transformation
This renovation turned a compact home into a bright and welcoming family space designed for easy living and time spent together. The clients, a young family who love being outdoors, had a property with great potential but limited connection between the interior and the backyard. The original home was a simple rectangular layout with a detached rumpus room and a recently added carport, but the living and dining areas felt tight and there was no pleasant outdoor spot to enjoy a meal.
The unused old brick garage and detached rumpus room inspired a fresh approach. By joining this area to the main house, we were able to extend the hallway, open up the floorplan and create a much larger living and dining zone. This required a full rebuild of the space, including demolition, a new slab, new framing and a hand pitched raked roof that lifted the ceiling height to around five metres. This allowed for angled Bradnams windows, a commercial size corner stacker and two skylights, filling the new area with natural light. The entire roof, including the existing house, was replaced with Colorbond Surfmist, and the external cladding was a mix of James Hardie Axon Smooth and Scyon Linear. Internally, Gyprock walls were finished with a VJ feature wall to add warmth and texture.
Cyclone Alfred struck soon after framing, creating a memorable challenge. With windows onsite and framing not yet braced, we added substantial temporary bracing and secured all openings thoroughly, protecting the structure and keeping the project on track.
The completed space feels open, airy and inviting. The high ceilings, raked windows, corner stacker and skylights combine to create a stunning connection to the outdoors and a living area that suits the family perfectly.
