Elevating Home Life: A home extension | Bongaree

A traditional Queenslander-style residence underwent a remarkable transformation to accommodate the needs of a busy household, our clients and their five teenagers. Reflecting the typical layout of such homes, this four-bedroom Queenslander, constructed in the late 1930s, initially lacked the contemporary function of open-plan living. However, our clients were eager to contemporise the space, while preserving its historical charm, aiming for enhanced functionality and space to accommodate their growing family.

Originally, the kitchen was segregated behind walls, contributing to a sense of confinement and isolation from the connecting living and dining areas. Hoping for an open and interconnected living space, the clients envisioned a design that maximised available room. Recognising the need for an upgrade due to limited maintenance and poor construction, the possibility of extending the rear of the property was explored. This involved extending, reroofing, and restumping the elevated deck, therefore creating additional space to integrate into the proposed living, kitchen, and dining areas. Additionally, the clients expressed a desire to convert a fourth bedroom into a luxurious master suite complete with an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe. With these goals in mind, our dedicated team of builders had our work cut out for us, but we were up for the task!

Following the successful execution of the extension and installation of external windows and doors, the removal of kitchen walls immediately brought a sense of scale to the space. VJ panelling and polished Cypress flooring were thoughtfully incorporated, blending with the existing flooring, and introducing the area with timeless elegance. The reconfigured layout saw the kitchen and lounge areas exchange positions, with the new kitchen now providing additional space for a butler's pantry, enhancing functionality and storage capacity. The kitchen underwent an amazing transformation from a dated and enclosed space to a vibrant, contemporary space. The kitchen cabinetry, supplied by Desire Interiors was painted in a soothing green, which complemented the Reece Pluming matte brass hardware and a gold Memo Zenna double bowl sink and fixtures perfectly.

Next to the kitchen lies the newly appointed parents' retreat, seamlessly blending with the home's heritage aesthetic. Featuring VJ panelling in a musk purple shade, the bedroom radiates a whimsical charm, further highlighted by a bay window seat overlooking views of the garden. Sliding doors lead to the ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, where a carefully curated blend of tones and textures creates a captivating atmosphere. Gray VJ panelling and white subway tiles wrap the walls of the bathroom, featuring soft pink shades scattered throughout the porcelain mosaic-look floor tiles. A shaker-style vanity in Tornado Satin finish by Laminex complements beautifully next to the grey walls and chrome fixtures from the Kado Era Reece Plumbing range all seamlessly merging the old with the new.

Maximising available space, a built-in floating shelving desk area was incorporated into the bedroom wall outside the lounge room, featuring a seasoned Oak natural finish and Fox Teakwood doors from the Laminex range. The new office quarter blends perfectly with the rest of the lounge room space.
