Bringing Light to Life
Bringing Light to Life: A Family Kitchen Transformation
For Becky and Chris, juggling busy professional lives and raising two young boys, a functional and inviting kitchen was essential. Their original kitchen was dark, dated, and poorly designed, with little natural light and impractical features like open cabinet tops that just gathered dust. With a love of plants and nature, they dreamed of a bright, welcoming space that blended better with their lifestyle — and their orchid garden outside.
We completed a full renovation of their kitchen, including partial demolition of existing block walls to install a new splash window that floods the space with natural light. Structural supports were added to maintain the integrity of the home, and we replaced all cabinetry, fittings, fixtures, and most appliances. The design incorporated a hybrid cooking setup (gas and electric), along with a motorised pop-up power outlet set neatly into the stone benchtop. All of this was done while the family continued to live in the house — a challenge we met with strict site safety measures, especially important with two small kids underfoot.
Chris’s keen eye for detail ensured we chose warm tones that complemented the rest of their home. Originally planning black overhead cabinets, they opted instead for a rich dark green, tying the interior to their thriving orchid garden outside the new window. Even with a few challenges — including coordinating the tricky installation of the pop-up power outlet and a lot of debate over bin configurations — the project wrapped up smoothly and without disputes.
Seeing the genuine excitement on Becky and Chris’s faces when the new window was revealed made the whole project memorable. Sometimes it’s the simple things, like natural light and thoughtful design, that completely transform a space.
