I have known Gavin Wilson for over 25 years, as he previously worked on a major renovation of our existing, dilapidated, Federation home, back in 1997 , as an apprentice carpenter for his father's building company ( George Wilson Constructions).

When we acquired some extra land at the rear of our property in 2016/17, we wanted to build a granny flat in the exact style and detail of the Federation house in which we resided , just on a smaller scale. I remembered Gavin, and his friendly accommodating personality, and tracked him down at Smith & Sons. Fortunately Gavin was keen to do the job.

The brief included a major rock excavation on the steeply sloping site, and then the building of a double brick Federation, Queen Anne style, one bedroom house with a shingled witch's hat/turret, ornate ceilings, and arches, exterior three storey lift, brick tuck-pointing, and floors to match the existing Kauri Pine, of the original house. Although the new house was small , it was to have complex rendered windowsills, two chimneys, marble gas fireplaces, and joinery to match the existing windows and verandas, with tesselated tiles, on the three verandas, and wooden shingle gables. The existing two car garage required a new roof, that was going to be in keeping with the more steeply sloping gables.

Gavin helped us to find a draughtsperson, to further detail the plans, and work commenced in approximately October 2021
Although the build took longer than expected ( due to the covid pandemic, supply problems, and tradesmen shortages and the complexity of building on a small site) I was amazed and ecstatic with the final result, which also included more sandstone steps, paving, and wrought iron steps installed, from the front gate, down to the main entrance.

The final result can only be described as amazing. Gavin's on- site manager and carpenter Troy, and his other employees (particularly Alex), were incredibly hard-working, professional and meticulous in their standards. They readily discussed any issues, concerning the precise details and preferences I might have for the aesthetics and details of the house. All the contractors that were used were very friendly, polite and also worked to a very high standard, in particular the stonemason who was used for the sandstone steps, retaining walls and paving, Jackie the painter, Shaughn the electrician, and Luke the plumber.

The end result exceeded all my expectations, and although I am very glad that the job has been completed, I am a little sad not to have "the boys" on site anymore.

I have worked with other builders before, but I have never experienced the high standard and attention to detail, as well as the affable, easy-going personality that Gavin exhibits, and I would highly and unequivically recommend him to anyone considering a house build or renovation in the future.

I could not be happier.
