How to survive a kitchen renovation

When the heart of your home is ripped apart, you can expect some stress from within your family. The average kitchen renovation takes between four and six weeks meaning this stress is not short-lived… However, with a bit of preparation, the process can be a lot easier for you and your family.

These are our top tips for surviving a kitchen renovation!

Keep only the essentials out

When it comes to packing up the items in your old kitchen before a renovation, you will be faced with the question of what to pack and what to keep out. Our advice is to keep only the essentials out. This means packing up or throwing out the items that don't get used every day and keeping out the items that do. Depending on your family's cooking habits, these could include the food processor, the electric stove, the microwave, a chopping board, a few good knives and basic cooking and eating utensils. By keeping only the essentials out, you will reduce clutter and stay more organised.

Prepare meals

Before your kitchen is knocked out of action, take time to prepare freezer-friendly, reheatable meals. Think soups, curries and pastas! You will appreciate the taste of home when your abode no longer feels like one. Store the meals in your freezer or, if you don't have a lot of space, see if a nearby friend will sublet some of their sub-zero space to you.

Set up a makeshift kitchen

This step can be as simple as setting up your microwave, coffee machine and toaster in your laundry and is guaranteed to make the entire process easier… especially when you're craving that morning coffee!

Arrange to catch up with friends

It's likely that you will be relying on takeaway and eating out a lot more than usual while your kitchen is getting renovated. So, why not take the opportunity to catch up with those friends who you've been meaning to, but can never find time for? This doubles as the perfect way to unwind during the stress of a renovation.

Keep your eye on the prize

Through all the stress, try to think about how great it is going to look and feel when your new kitchen is complete. Take before photos to remind yourself of how far the job has progressed. Remember, it's short term pain for a long term gain.
