Queenslander Charm Rimagined

When this client, having completed 4 projects with us over the past two years, approached us with a renovation challenge, we knew we had to create something truly special. Their classic Queenslander had a narrow porch and stairs that made coming and going a bit of a hassle. As they’re both passionate about their outdoor garden and home, they dreamed of an entryway that not only functioned well, but also enhanced the beauty of their iconic Queenslander architecture. Our goal? To design a safer, more spacious entry that would maintain the charm and character of their beloved home.

 

The original stairs were cramped, making the entry feel tight and uncomfortable, with minimal protection from the wet season rains. It was time to give this home the grand entrance it deserved! Our solution was a complete redesign—wider stairs, a more open landing, and a roof that now covers the entire area, providing much-needed weather protection. We also incorporated modern operable louvres to shield the entry from the morning sun, keeping it comfortable throughout the day.

 

One of the trickiest parts of the renovation was dealing with asbestos in the original structure. We approached this with the utmost care and ensured that every step of the construction adhered to safety regulations, while also blending seamlessly with the traditional aesthetics of the Queenslander. By the end of the project, the couple’s home had a beautifully crafted entrance that was not only practical but a true statement piece.

 

What really brought this project together was the delicate white fretwork detailing—a nod to the home’s heritage with a modern twist. It was the perfect finishing touch, adding a layer of elegance and sophistication to an already impressive renovation. The couple were thrilled, and so were we. After working with them on four different projects over two years, we’ve built a relationship that feels like family. It’s the kind of collaboration we live for.

 

This project wasn’t just about building stairs; it was about enhancing the very heart of this Queenslander home, creating an entryway that marries tradition with modern comforts. We’re proud of the result and excited for the next chapter with these wonderful clients.
