Modern Transformation of a 1970s Family Home
An impressive renovation project was recently completed in Briar Hill, where we breathed new life into a dated 70’s home. Originally a relic of its time, this house was marked by enclosed, condensed spaces typical of the era. The homeowners turned to us to help bring their vision to life. The brief was to create a living area that allowed for light to flow in while also giving the illusion of space. Another requirement was for it to be functional enough to meet the needs of a growing family. While the project presented some challenges, our team was more than ready to tackle it head-on.
The Plan
Before the renovation, the home was dark and compartmentalised, with small living areas and a secluded kitchen that offered little space for family connection. The clients envisioned an open-plan design that maximised natural light while also providing practical living spaces for the entire family. A crucial element of the brief was the addition of a self-contained unit for the family’s ageing father, offering independence while ensuring he remained connected to the household. To achieve this, we reconfigured the entire ground floor and extended the upper level, creating expansive living spaces, a spacious kitchen, and well-lit bedroom, all while ensuring the independent quarters blended seamlessly with the main home.
Challenges Along the Way
As with any large-scale renovation, this project wasn’t without its hurdles. One of the major challenges we encountered was the condition of the original concrete slab. Years of wear had left it uneven, requiring extensive grinding and levelling to ensure a stable foundation for the new engineered flooring. Despite these obstacles, the Smith & Sons team remained focused, working tirelessly to prepare the home for the next phase of the transformation.
The Design
The design aimed to cultivate a bright, spacious ambiance throughout the home. White cabinetry and soft-toned walls were selected to enhance the flow of daylight, completely transforming the once dim and confined areas. The kitchen, which is now the centrepiece of the home, features a stunning island that doubles as a bar, and is complemented by black and brown bar stools. To add warmth and texture to the sleek, modern design, we incorporated exposed brick walls — one of our favourite statement features to this project.
A Smooth Collaboration
Working closely with the homeowners was a key highlight of this venture. They were actively involved in the design and planning process, attending regular site visits and providing valuable input along the way. Their enthusiasm and excitement at each stage of the renovation motivated our team to deliver an exceptional result. The project was completed to an incredibly high standard, and the family was thrilled with how the contemporary design and practical layout came together.
The transformation of this Briar Hill property is a perfect example of how a thoughtful renovation can completely revitalise a home. From the elegant white cabinetry to the exposed brick walls and engineered flooring, every detail was selected to enhance the home’s natural light and create a more liveable space. Smith & Sons successfully delivered a home that not only looks stunning but also meets the functional needs of a multigenerational family, proving once again why we are trusted leaders in home renovations.
